Top Reasons why Homeowners Sell and Move

On average, American homeowners sell and move every five to seven years. While people that have chosen to stay in one place for decades might have difficulty understanding this, people have many reasons for moving and they act on them with regularity.

Here are the top reasons why people sell and move from their homes:

Upgrading

Fitting right in with American culture as a whole, people often want larger, grander, and more expensive homes than they already have. It’s quite typical for people to purchase a home, and instead of being grateful for their new residence, quickly seek out pricier alternatives.

Home is too small

While some people choose to upgrade solely for the purpose of upgrading, many outgrow their starter homes as their family increases in size. It’s common for people to purchase a home, and even 5 years later, choose to move into a larger one to fit their changing household.

Fixing purchase error

One of the many reasons why you should do your due diligence before buying a home is to avoid purchasing error, the phenomenon in which buyers make a major mistake in evaluating the livability of their new home. This could be anything from buying a yard-less home and later wanting a garden, to becoming increasingly irritated at geographical inconveniences, such as overhead planes or living near a highway.

Seeing family more often

While not everyone will be able to share this sentiment, many choose to move so they can be closer to their relatives. This is yet another reason why it’s important to take full consideration of your available options before buying and moving into a new home.

Transferring jobs

The most common cut-off for people when it comes to commuting is one hour- if they need to travel over an hour a day for a new job, they’ll move. Relocation makes it necessary for many homeowners to sell their current properties and move closer to their new place of occupation.

Retirement

Many buyers over the age of 55 choose to move into active-adult communities, which commonly feature attractions such as workout facilities, golf courses, backyard barbecue parties, and more, all designed for those 55 and older.
