How to Sell in the Fall

Most real estate agents would agree that the Fall is a great season in which to sell a home- kids have gone back to school, families have returned from Summer vacation, and the holidays aren’t yet upon us. During the 80 or so days of Fall, many homeowners consider selling their homes to the next right buyer.

Given the popularity of selling in the Fall, and the relative ease with which someone can sell their home (if they put in the effort), it’s important to develop a selling strategy specific to the season. Here are the top ways to attract an Autumn homebuyer:

Create Autumn Curb Appeal

My favorite autumn flowers are chrysanthemums (otherwise known as ‘mums’) and marigolds. Both flowers can be purchased in yellow, which works well with many Fall motifs, and by placing them on the steps of your front porch and along the sidewalk, you’ll create seasonal curb appeal that can’t be replicated in the Summer or Winter. Accenting the flowers with pumpkins and other types of squash helps to pull the would-be homebuyer in as well.

Dress up the Windows

Nothing will make your windows appear more dusty and streaked than the impact of rain and wind over the course of a Summer. While you might not notice the difference between a window that hasn’t been cleaned since the start of the Summer and one that’s been recently freshened up, many buyers will. Washing your windows inside and out will serve you well in the homeselling process.

Clean Your Yard

Nobody likes to clean up their yard, whether it’s cutting back overgrown vegetation or raking dead leaves and debris. Unfortunately, in order to sell a home in a timely fashion, you’ll need to neaten up the inside as well as the outside. Take the time, put in the effort, and you’ll be glad you did.

Clean out the Fireplace

There’s nothing quite like the smell of smoke from a wood-burning fireplace- especially in the Fall! Chances are good that unless you live in Alaska, however, your fireplace will have built up cobwebs and dust since the last time it was used. By vacuuming and washing down your fireplace, you’ll draw attention to a well-loved household amenity that potential buyers will be able to envision themselves using with joy.

Prepare Fall-Based Food and Drink

So long as you’re able to abstain from eating all of them, consider setting out freshly baked pumpkin cupcakes or crisp red apples in a bowl for those visiting your home. Putting a tray of cinnamon sticks on the counter will improve the smell of the room as well as serve as a decorative centerpiece, and hot apple cider can fit right alongside it. Make use of the produce that Fall has to offer to spruce up parts of your home that might not otherwise catch the eye of a buyer.
