If you’ve found yourself with lots of time at home and unsure as to what home improvements you can make, consider repainting. Nothing makes a more immediate impact on the visual appeal of your home’s interior than a new paint job, and given how time-consuming the process to be, there may not be a better time to get started than now.
Here are a few tips to start painting like a professional:
Thoroughly inspect and prep
Before applying new primer and paint, be sure to lightly sand or scrape any cracked, peeling, or flaking areas. Greasy spots will also need a bit of washing with soap.
Buy the best tools
It doesn’t make sense to pinch pennies on the application while splurging on great paint. Good roller covers and brushes give excellent coverage so you don’t waste time and paint on re-application.
Protect everything
You’ll never regret the time spent covering hardware, furniture, and floors before beginning a paint project. Drop cloths are a must, and small plastic sandwich bags secured with tape can easily protect doorknobs.
Use primer
Paint-and-primer combinations are fine if your surface is already clean and smooth. If there are any issues with the wall or it’s been more than eight years since you last painted, go with a separate primer.
Box your paint
Instead of using one gallon at a time, combine all the paint into one large container and mix it thoroughly. This is known as “boxing” your paint, and it keeps the color consistent from start to finish.
