How to Organize Your Home

Most people would agree that they should, and could, be more organized. The difficulty in organizing your living space, however, usually doesn’t boil down to lack of desire- it comes with the struggle in not knowing the best layout or organizing strategies for your home. For that reason, and many others, here’s a list of steps you can take to organize your home to best suit your lifestyle:

Buy an Adjustable Table

While it might seem like an unnecessary expense, buying an adjustable table will do wonders for creating extra space in your house. Given that it can serve as both a coffee table and kitchen/dining table, purchasing an adjustable table (check out Lifehack.org for some good ones) will provide for a much more open environment in your living room.

Add a Drawer Organizer

Whether we’re working with your kitchen junk drawer, the tools drawer in your garage, or your bedroom dresser, adding a drawer organizer and grouping like items together will work wonders for keeping tabs on your supply of smaller items.

Establish Zones

By designating particular zones in the rooms of your house, you’ll be able to achieve a degree of organization that wouldn’t be possible without drawing boundaries. This tactic can be applied to a range of areas of your home, from separating the paper-filing station and reference area in your office to dividing the TV-watching and socializing areas of your living room.

Buy a Label-Maker

What have you been waiting for? Label-makers will save you a great deal of headache and heartbreak in your quest for an organized home, and can be used in any home with cabinets, drawers, or anything else you can think of that could be labelled for ease of use and identification. Consider labeling your valuables as well with contact information to increase the likelihood of them being returned to you.

Organize by Use

Making sure that frequently-used items are accessible (and at eye level, when possible) will reduce the hassle you’ll have to occasionally go through in finding items that you need.

Insert Racks/Bowls/Drawers

Whether it’s a bowl for your keys or a shelf for your books, inserting racks and other containers in appropriate places in your house (keys belong near the door, by the way) will greatly reduce the likelihood of your losing the items you find most important.
