The holiday season is officially underway, which means many people will be taking time off from work to visit family or travel. Before hopping on a plane, however, there are some tasks you’ll need to take care of at home.
Climate
When leaving your home in the winter, striking a balance between saving energy and keeping your house at safe temperature levels is key- nobody likes coming home to burst pipes. Be sure to keep your thermostat at 65 degrees when leaving for an extended period of time.
Plumbing
In the winter, freezing pipes are always a concern. You might want to keep a faucet dripping to avoid this. However, it’s a good idea to stop the water for toilets and washing machines.
Electricity
Unplug everything, even smaller appliances like coffee makers. This will cut down your electricity bill, especially if you’re able to unplug larger appliances like your refrigerator.
Monitoring
Chances are good that at any given moment, there are systems monitoring what’s happening in your house, whether it’s the temperature or your lights. If you don’t have one in place, consider purchasing one to ensure you’ll have more peace of mind while away.
