The Philadelphia Inquirer has a story looking at things to do in and around Philadelpiha this weekend. Here are the events they include:
- Starting Friday, Sept. 19, over 120 local, student and professional artists — like Sarah Pollock, Brian Eppley and Arlene Steinberg — post up along Rittenhouse Square (18th and Walnut Streets) for a three-day Fine Art Show that extends to Sunday, Sept. 21. A streetside café and farmers market round things out on Sunday. The show runs from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Friday and Saturday and from 11 a.m. until 5 p.m. on Sunday, rain or shine.
- It’s never too early for a good scare. Strap on your straightjacket and prepare for the six horror-inducing attractions at Eastern State Penitentiary’s (22nd Street and Fairmount Avenue) Terror Behind the Walls, which welcomes terror-chasing fans for opening weekend from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 19 and Saturday, Sept. 20.
- Fall’s harvest comes early — Saturday, Sept. 20 to be exact — with a full day of produce, plants, kids’ activities, beer garden and contests (two: one for oversized garden veggies and one for best arrangements of flowers, herbs and the like) during the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society Fall Festival, held at the Navy Yard (4747 S. Broad St.). For the first time ever, the Franklin Flea will be rounding up top vendors for the event, running 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
- DIY scarecrows at Peddler’s Village (Routes 202 and 263, Lahaska, Pa.) — oh, if they only had a brain. The annual Scarecrow Festival runs from Saturday, Sept. 20 through Sunday, Sept. 21 and also features a pumpkin-pie-eating contest, pumpkin-painting, and live music from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. both days.
- Before the proposed 2.2-mile Spring Garden Street Greenway transformation even begins, see a one-block version of the final product on Saturday, Sept. 20. From 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. the Spring Garden Pop-Up Greenway will feature a beer garden, bike parade, multiuse median trail, bike tune-up classes, performances from Sweet Briar Rose, Flash Bang, Howling Fantods, Power Animal, Nik Greely & Swift Technique, and food trucks, including Gigi’s and Big R, Luscious Bakery, Jerry’s Kitchen, and The Whirly Pig. It all goes down on Spring Garden between 9th and 10th Streets.
- A West Philly park — Clark Park (4398 Chester Ave.) — plays venue to bands, — Katie Frank and the Pheromones, Mo Lowda and the Humble, Heat Striker and others — art vendors, crafts and free food trucks during this music and arts festival on Saturday, Sept. 20, starting at noon.
- One of Germany’s greatest traditions will bring thousands of pork products to South Street during Brauhaus Schmitz’s (718 South St.) Oktoberfest. Beer, authentic Bavarian buffet and festival are all on tap from noon until 8 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 20.
- Feria del Barrio, or “Neighborhood Fair,” honors Latin music and dancing (bust a move), Latino cuisine (eat up), vendors (shop away) and entertainment for the young ones (bring ’em) on Sunday, Sept. 21 from 12:30 p.m. to 5 p.m. at El Centro de Oro (N. 5th Street between Cambria Street and Lehigh Avenue).
- The next best thing to a Brazilian getaway is Brazilian Day at the Great Plaza at Penn’s Landing (Chestnut Street and Columbus Boulevard) on Sunday, Sept. 21. This celebration on the waterfront runs from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m. and has cultural cuisine, vendors and dance: samba, forro, pagode, capoeira, etc.
- For the love of water! Seriously, that’s what’s happening at 1 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 21 at Fairmount Water Works (640 Waterworks Dr.). The FLOW Festival, an on-land, interactive day of aquatics features a “splash organ” (using buckets of water to make sound), fish puppet-making, and light show.
- Vampires beware! The Garlic Festival at Temple Ambler Food Crops Garden (580 Meeting House Rd.) highlights the best meals utilizing garlic and a garden fair. Running from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 21, the event is ideal for homegrown entertainment.
