How to Turn a House Into Your Home

Lately, I’ve been thinking about how people settle into the houses they move into and truly make them theirs. The form of your house isn’t nearly as important as the things that go on inside, from the people that occupy it to the activities that take place there, and the process of making a house yours is one that requires consideration to develop the sense of ease and comfort that’s traditionally associated with a home.

Here are a few things you can do to make a house your home:

Floors

One of the things that unite homes everywhere is an attention to what happens under your feet. Adding rugs and carpets will help establish your personal style, while also helping with sound insulation and providing a soft, warm feeling. If the textiles you choose to lay down have a personal significance, all the better!

Lighting

Lighting sometimes requires a professional touch, but changing out the pre-existing lighting in a home on your own will allow you to add a personal touch and determine where and how the light works in your room. Many homes are constructed with the simplest possible lighting, and while the cost-effectiveness of this approach is understandable, having soft lighting at a lower height makes a room feel cozy.

Storage

While the lighting and floors shouldn’t be overlooked, the functionality of a home often plays a major role in the degree to which its occupants settle into the space. A well-organized bookshelf, increased storage, or adding handmade baskets will do wonders for making your space feel open, clean, and useful.

Artwork

Many people view artwork to be elitist, or even frivolous, but I find that personal artwork can add a great deal to a home’s aura. Regardless of whether you’re adding in objects that can be found in nature, family weavings, or photographs, displaying your art in an appealing, organized manner can make a living space feel like a home in short order.

Customized Details

Whether you’re a fan of faux gold leaf on lamp bases, colored weaving in the backs of chairs, or red dresser handles, customizing various details of your new home will go a long way towards building your relationship with the space. Don’t be afraid to ask for advice from fellow design enthusiasts, as a fresh eye can help a great deal, but it’s your space- make it yours.
