Make the Most of a Small Apartment

Small apartments are often underrated because of their size. However, not only are they more affordable than bigger spaces, but you can also do a lot with very little square footage, especially when you prioritize functionality and remain intentional with your design decisions.

You might have to tap into your creativity, but it’s possible to live in a space that is both functional and inviting. If you currently live in a small apartment or you’re planning to move into one soon, take a moment to look into how you can make the most of a small apartment. To help you out, here are three tips for making the most of a small apartment and turning a tiny living space into a home that you love.

Be intentional about your apartment’s layout

The key to making the most of a small apartment is to strategize. Envision what you want your apartment to look like before you start bringing furniture, decor or appliances into your space. Visualize where you want everything you need to go, and then start introducing your belongings into your apartment according to the plan.

Likewise, prior to making any purchases for your small apartment, plan ahead by thinking about the layout. Before you buy anything, ask yourself, “Where will this go?” You can even check out other small apartment layouts for inspiration. Keep the functionality of furniture pieces in mind as well. For instance, buying a couch that doubles as a bed rather than purchasing both a couch and a bed can be a great way to make the most of a small apartment.

Avoid adding dark colors to your walls

Have you ever noticed that bright spaces look bigger than dimly lit rooms? That’s because lighter colors open up the space, whereas darker colors make areas look smaller than they actually are. When working with a small apartment, it is advisable to have walls that are either white, beige, light yellow or subtle gray.

If you’re worried about the lack of color, you can always make up for it with bright bedsheets, vibrant rugs, bold throw pillows and eye-catching furniture. Lightly colored walls don’t have to be dull or boring.

Make it a point to stay as organized as possible

When you don’t have a lot of space to work with, it’s important to make sure that everything has its own place in your apartment. Try to remain organized on a day-to-day basis. When you are done with something and no longer need to use it, put it back where it belongs.

Invest in furniture that can also be used for storage purposes. For example, if you plan to buy a bed frame, look for one that has drawers as part of the base. When searching for a small apartment, keep built-in storage options in mind as well. A small apartment with a lot of cabinets can be more beneficial than a unit without any cupboards or closets, because those additional storage spaces can help you stay organized for the duration of your lease.
