How to Make the Most of a Small Kitchen

Not every home buyer is able to afford their dream home right away. Whether it’s the lighting, the appliances, or the amount of space you have, there will usually be changes you wish you could make. But if your kitchen is smaller than you’d like, there may be more you can do with the space than you might initially think.

Here’s how to make the most of a small kitchen:

Make space

There’s always more you can do to make space. For starters, hang things over the sink, like cutting boards and colanders. If you’re entertaining or just want more counter space, you can put burner covers or trays on the stove. Folding tables also add counter space. Of course, you can always go through your things and decide.

Use the walls

Use wall space to hang pegboards or magnetic strips. This will allow you to hang pots and metallic utensils. Similarly, use magnetic racks for spices, towels, or pot holders. You can also use hooks that affix over cabinets for dish towels.

Utilize bookcases

Bookcases are quite useful, as there are many options when it comes to their shape and size. Not only are they good for holding cookbooks, but they can also hold pots and pans and containers. Attach hooks to the side to hold dish towels or aprons.

Make it aesthetic

Use art or a color scheme to spice up your kitchen. Make room for decorations. And if you only want to keep the kitchen necessities, choose fun and decorative towels, aprons, and oven mitts. Another easy step to take is to place flowers on the table. In terms of greenery, you can also put some on the windowsill.

Cover the things you don’t want to see

Of course, there will be things that you don’t want to look at all the time. So just cover them up! For instance, use curtains to hide exposed pipes. If your appliances are what’s bothering you, use adhesive vinyl to make them look new again. If you have scratches on the floor, try some mats.

Fix the lighting

Proper lighting can be a challenge in kitchens. If you want an abundance of light for when you’re cooking, try placing some lights under the cabinets. Overhead lighting should focus on the space between the stove, sink, and refrigerator. And if you don’t have enough overhead lighting, don’t be afraid to add some lamps.
