How to Get Your Home Ready for Autumn

The summer heat is fading fast, and it won’t be long before autumn bursts into life with its gentle colors, sounds, and smells. Unfortunately, with the end of summer comes a number of tasks that should be added to your to-do list that need to be addressed to get your home ready for the coming seasonal changes.

Here are some tips for getting your home ready for autumn, which will help to make it the most wonderful time of the year:

Inspect the Roof and Clean the Gutters

Take a close look at your roof and see if there are any leaves, debris, damaged tiles or cracks. Fix what needs to be fixed and clean your roof in its entirety- and don’t forget to clean the gutters while you’re up there!

Trim

Trees grow quite a bit in the summer, as do the shrubs, bushes, and other plants in your garden. Check all of them, and trim if necessary.

Test Home Safety Devices

Autumn is the season when we start turning on the heating and lighting the fireplace with increasing frequency. Replace the batteries in all smoke detectors and carbon monoxide devices you have at home. Test all of them to make sure they’re working properly.

Check Water Drainage

With the autumn essentially guaranteed to be wet and windy, make sure that rainwater downspouts are clear of obstructions and are able to direct water away from foundations, walkways and driveways.

Stock up on Firewood

You’ll likely be able to purchase firewood at a discounted price now versus buying it in October. Either order enough for the season, or if you gather your own, make sure it’s dry and ready. Be sure to keep it covered and stored away from the house for your own safety.
