Expert Tips for a Great Lawn

Most homeowners that I know have to put hours and hours into caring for their lawns, with little results. If you’ve ever dreamed of a lush, green lawn, you’ll need to put in some effort- there’s no doubt about it. However, with a consistent and patient approach, not to mention the right tools and tips, you’ll get there.

Here are a few expert tips for having a great lawn:

Water Deeply and Less Often

Watering your lawn frequently for short periods of time will teach your grass to have a shallow root system, making it easier for weeds to emerge. This will also make the grass more susceptible to disease.

To prevent this from happening, water your lawn less frequently for longer periods of time. This will train the grass to grow deep, healthy room systems, allowing it to stay green.

Alternate Mowing Patterns

Many of us fall into a standard mowing routine, walking the same paths to try to finish as quick as possible. This not only causes the grass to lay in one direction, but can cause compacted ruts from the mower. You can prevent this by mowing in alternate directions with different patterns, which will lead to a better-looking, more even lawn.

Keep Your Mower Blades Sharp

Just because your blades cut grass doesn’t mean they’re sharp. Dull blades are still able to cut grass, but they’ll leave the grass’ tiny blades sticking upwards, causing it to become brown. Sharp blades sever grass evenly, so keep yours in good condition.

Use Screened Compost

Spreading a thin layer of screened compost over the surface of your lawn will replenish organisms, bacteria, and fungi, which play a central role in healthy soil. Compost is also extremely organic, and will act as a strong fertilizer.

Cut it Right

Grass has roots that are as long as it is high, so mowing your grass to a low height to put off the next cut for as long as possible will do more harm than good. A healthy height is around 3”, but don’t mow more than 1/3rd of the height of your grass at once, as it will weaken the grass and make it susceptible to drought and disease.
